Bamboo sheets are everywhere right now. Silky, "eco," cooling — the marketing writes itself. So we get asked a lot: why didn't Benji go bamboo?
Short answer: we tested it, and it didn't hold up to real life. Real life means kids, pets, hot summers, busy weeks and a washing machine that runs on hot. Our Signature Performance Fabric was built for exactly that. It's soft, cool and clean — So. Damn. — and it stays that way wash after wash.
Here's the honest breakdown.
First, what "bamboo" sheets actually are
Most bamboo sheets aren't bamboo fibre you could pull off a stalk. The plant is broken down into pulp with chemical solvents, then reformed into a fibre called viscose (also known as rayon). That's why the care tag usually reads "viscose from bamboo" or "rayon," not just "bamboo."
Viscose can feel lovely out of the package. But it's a regenerated fibre, and it comes with some real trade-offs once it hits your bed and your laundry room.
1. It's built to last
Viscose is noticeably weaker when it's wet. That's why bamboo sheets often come with gentle-cycle, cold-wash, hang-dry instructions — and why they're prone to pilling, thinning and tearing over time.
Our performance fabric is made from tightly woven, ultra-fine fibres that are strong wet or dry. It resists pilling and fading, and it holds its shape wash after wash. Toss it in, wash it on warm, dry it on low, and put it right back on the bed.
2. Laundry day is easy
Bamboo viscose wrinkles easily and can shrink if it's washed or dried too hot. Many brands recommend line drying, which isn't realistic for most households.
Performance fabric is naturally wrinkle-resistant and dries fast, so your bed looks put-together without ironing. It's machine-wash friendly and colourfast, so your navy stays navy. That's the Clean in So. Damn.
3. Soft and cool, night after night
Bamboo's softness is real on day one. The problem is how it ages: as viscose fibres break down, sheets can feel thin, fuzzy or limp.
Our performance fabric has a brushed, buttery-soft hand that stays consistent over time. It's lightweight and breathable, and it wicks moisture away from your skin so you sleep cool instead of clammy. Soft. Cool. Clean. That's the whole point.
4. Better value, no ridiculous markup
Bamboo sets often sell at a premium, and the delicate care means you may be replacing them sooner. We started Benji in 2018 to deliver the softest damn sheets without the retail markup. Performance fabric lets us do that: premium feel, everyday price, and a set that keeps earning its spot on your bed.
| Signature Performance Fabric | Bamboo viscose | |
|---|---|---|
| Strength when wet | Strong | Weakens when wet |
| Pilling and thinning | Resists | Prone over time |
| Wrinkles | Resists | Wrinkles easily |
| Washing | Machine wash, tumble dry low | Often cold, gentle, hang dry |

The honest take
We're not here to trash bamboo. If you love a slinky, silky drape and don't mind hand-care routines, it can be a nice treat.
But if you want sheets that feel amazing, look good with zero effort, and survive kids, pets and weekly washes, performance fabric is the smarter buy. That's why 200,000+ Canadians sleep on Benji, with 6,000+ five-star reviews behind them.
Try it for 100 nights
Don't take our word for it. Sleep on our Signature Performance Fabric for 100 nights, with free shipping. If it's not the softest damn sheet you've ever owned, we'll make it right.
Sweet dreams,
